TURF TALK
Members,
October is here and our temperatures are beginning to drop off. As I prepare this Turf Talk on September 23rd, the next ten days of daily temperatures won’t be above 81 degrees with overnight lows in the low and mid 50’s. In this fall shoulder season, we will begin to phase into less mowing frequencies and raise our mowing heights in preparation for winter.
As I spoke about last month, we will be spraying the fairways with a fungicide in October to aid in preventing spring dead spot, we will spray now and evaluate the efficacy in the spring.
This month, I will spray pre-emergent herbicide on our greens and green surrounds to aid in POA control and if any POA breaks through the pre-emergent, we will use post emergent to control them as well as fungicide applications to prevent spring dead spot coming out of winter. Last season our new Tifeagle greens came out of winter in fantastic shape, and I expect the same for the new greens on the back nine to do the same.
Our golf course is healthy and ninety-five percent weed free especially in the playing areas. I will be cleaning up some Yellow Sedges in fairways along with some Virginia Buttonweed and Goosegrass as well. It is my goal to be as weed free as possible throughout the year but especially moving into the shoulder season.
In summary, the 2026 season has been very successful, long and hot but I am very happy where we are agronomically and I see no reason that the 2027 season will be even better. As always, I appreciate each of your support along the way and as always, we will continue making Coharie the best it can be.
Respectfully,
Mike
