TYGA Coharie Junior Classic

On September 19-20 Coharie had the privilege of hosting a Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) Coharie Junior Classic. TYGA was formed in 1996 to offer Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) membership to those junior in North Carolina who are members of a traditional golf or country club. TYGA provides playing opportunities for its members, conducts educational seminars and events, acts as a junior golf informational clearinghouse, publishes monthly North Carolina junior rankings, and awards Junior player of the Year and All-State awards to the top juniors in the state. Anyone who 18 years of age or under is eligible to membership.

The event this years was held in hot but sunny weather with a field of 78 players. All of the male players played from the blue tees and the female players played from the gold tees. Saturday’s round was highlighted by the 68 shot by Ethan Pac from Pinehurst. Jackson Phipps of Raleigh shot a second round 71 to go along with 70 in the day one to claim first place. Pak and Keean Albertyn tied for second finishing one shot behind Phipps. Phipps and Pak are both 15 years old while Albertyn is 17. Girls division was won by Sarah Eavenson from Fayetteville (her mother teaches at SCC) followed by Naya O’Neill of Winston-Salem, Georgia Byrd of Clayton, and Coharie’s own Mary Thomas Williams. Walker Parrish of Coharie also made his tournament debut in the event.

The weather was good and the golf was fantastic. Congratulations to all participants.
