TURF TALK FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Back nine greens and course update:

Dear Members,

The back nine will open for members-only play on August 8 th . We are finishing the final sodding around washed-out green edges on holes twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen, while continuing to grow in the remaining slower-to-fill areas. Based on what we learned from last year’s renovation, there will be excellent pin locations when we open. However, until the greens are fully healed, I cannot lower the height of cut too much without risking damage. As a result, the back nine greens may be slightly slower than the front nine at first, but I expect them to match the front nine’s rolling speed by late August. To be clear, they will still roll true and fast.

The dedication to the back nine greens has reduced my availability for consistent front nine mowing of the rough and bunkers. I will get those areas back on track sooner rather than later. My staff of three folks to include me, appreciate your patience during this grown in period. I can see the finish line.

On a side note, you may see white flags planted on the course marking areas of sod that were contaminated with pre-emergent herbicide from the grower. They will be coming to strip and repair those areas soon. I will remove the flags when that happens.

 As a general note: The golf course is extremely healthy and growing well. As a precaution and normal practices, we have had soil samples taken form front and back nine greens additionally, few locations of fairway so I can gain insight as to the needs of the turf and respond accordingly. It has been and will always be my priority to insure Coharie Country Club is in the best agronomic shape that it can be.
