Turf Talk From The Supentendent
Members,
It is that time of year when we go back to “mats only” for the fall/winter season and when the grass starts growing again in early spring, we will transition back to the grass tee tops. Also, if you choose the right side of the practice range, it is for members ONLY who wish to hit on dormant grass. Please fill in those divots when you finish hitting.
Please be cognizant of parking at least thirty feet from the golf greens, as to not compact the green surrounds and approaches. Compaction is a real issue on number three from the tees to the fairway, please route to the left side of the ladies’ tee box or the right side far rough on this hole to minimize that compaction. Please remain diligent where you park and drive and if you see areas that are compacted, please reroute to an out of the way area near the tree lines as these areas are higher grass and will tolerate more cart traffic.
Please fill in your fairway and rough divots with the green sand provided, once dormancy occurs, if you are in a private cart, please stop on number ten and grab a sand bottle or two so you can fill in those divots. Additionally, please repair ball marks on the greens if you make one and perhaps another one that was left by someone else.
We are also in the process of winterizing the greens by applying potassium in preparation for winter temperatures so they can harden off to withstand the much colder temperatures. Potassium also assists in better water and nutrient uptake while helping synthesize proteins and starches. Potassium also helps the grass build thicker cell walls, stay healthy and strengthen the plant so it can withstand various stresses such as drought, heat, cold and disease.
Fairways and Greens,
Mike
