Turf Talk From The Supentendent

Members,

Today, July 28th marks the sixty seventh day of renovation of the front nine greens, resodding of the collars and we are in the final stages of grow in. At this point we are at the resting height of cut, which is .110 inches. We are vertigrooming, topdressing and rolling the greens weekly so we can provide the best quality putting surface for you to play on. The greens will be good and will roll well, but each day, week, month, and season passes they will continue to mature and become tighter, and the roll will get smoother and faster as well as healthier. Suffice it to say, the best is yet to come.

The golf course is in an incredibly good place agronomically and will continue to get better with each passing season. Edges of some of the greens due to the early storms and resulting washouts of the sprigs and green mix soil medium, will not be perfect, we are pushing those areas with hand top-dress sand to fill the low and uneven surfaces weekly and sometimes more often to smooth those edges out, this will be an ongoing process for weeks to come but will not affect ninety-five percent of the putting surface.

The new to us greens mower, fairway mower and pull behind rough unit are all going to assist us in maintaining the golf course at a higher level and a more consistent level. The tee-tops, fairways, green surrounds and all roughs are mowed twice weekly along with the expanded practice teeing areas. We still have a couple of areas on the front to resod such as behind #4 blue tee box.

The weather went from rain every day to 98* and no rain. The golf course is watered nightly and in many areas during the day to relieve the heat stress. We are doing what we can via our irrigation system to maintain those areas. We still have a lot of work ahead of us so please be patient in some of the wood line areas, as we are working through vehicle downtime that affects those areas.

Additionally, we will be cutting out some small dead areas on fourteen green that was a result of winter kill and resodding those areas, and continually pushing sixteen green to grow in.

I am incredibly pleased with our new product, proud of our team, Jacob, Bill, Ronnie and Simon, these men have been there to work through all of the issues, washouts, double duty, equipment breakdowns and all of the last minute schedule changes, adjustments along the way, I could not be more proud of them. I am also very thankful for the leadership of our Board of Directors and the Men’s Golf Association for their intuitive guidance and unwavering dedication to Coharie Country Club. Last but certainly not least, all the positive member support through this process, your encouragement, thumbs up, heartfelt thank you’s mean the world to our tired team of four men. Renovations are not for the faint of heart and our team cannot wait until next year’s renovation of the back nine greens.

Finally, the front nine will be open for member play only on August 9th. Until next month….

Fairways and Greens,

Mike
