Highway Patrol Event Raises Funds for Scholarships

Each June, Sampson County members of the Highway Patrol host a golf tournament in honor of trooper Randy Ward, who
died in 1988.

This year’s event was held at Coharie CC, with proceeds going to the Randy Ward Scholarship and the Sampson County Trooper Scholarship.

The scholarships are worth a $1,000 each and go to seniors that attend public high schools around the county. The remaining funds are given to underprivileged children during the Highway Patrol’s annual Christmas shopping event.

There were 87 golfers in this year’s tournament, with Alex Greyard, Justin Hunter, Eric Mellot and Robin Jones taking first place with a 58.

“It’s a worthy cause,” said Mike Jones of the Highway Patrol. “It was hot out here today, but fun.”

Coharie Golfers Do Well In Tarheel Youth Event

Brian Donaldson finished second overall in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association one-day event held at Coharie June 15.

Donaldson posted a 74 to finish a stroke out of first place, while Dylan Jordan of Clinton tied for third with a 77.

The boys winner was Trent Cloninger of Jacksonville with 73.

The event attracted 71 players from around the state.

GIRLS 12-13: Eleanor Cosgrove, Wilmington, 51-43–94.
GIRLS 14-16: Ashley Sloup, Oak Island, 48-48–96.
BOYS 11 & UNDER: Nicholas Loy, Greenville, 25 points.
BOYS 12-13: Matthew Simmons, Goldsboro, 41-35–76.
BOYS 14-15: Samuel Kocurek, Raleigh, 40-39–79
BOYS 16-18: Trent Cloninger, Jacksonville, 35-38–73

Interclub Update

Coharie’s team split its first two matches in the Carolinas Interclub competition, losing at Lakewood CC and winning at Willow Springs CC of Wilson. At Lakewood, our guys fell by a score of 24-12. Playing at home against Willow Springs, Coharie scored
a 26-10 victory. Way to go, guys. Upcoming matches bring Lakewood to Coharie on Saturday, July 17 at 10 a.m.; and we travel to Wilson to play Willow Springs on Sunday, July 18, with the action beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Golf Events in July

Professional Dickie Walters will conduct a Fourth of July Skins game on Saturday, July 3 in conjunction with the cookout and pool activities at the club.

Wilson golf equipment company will hold a Demo Day on Friday, July 16, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the practice range.

The Lady Sandtrappers will have their event at the club on Tuesday, July 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

Member-Guest Reminder: Entry Deadline: JULY 31

The entry deadline for the club’s Member-Guest is JULY 31st. The event, which will be held August 13-15, has an entry fee of $325 per team that includes a wine-tasting and Calcutta on Friday, Aug. 13; two days of golf and a dinner-dance on Saturday, Aug. 14. The band“Pizazz!” will provide music. Non-golfers can purchase tickets to the wine-tasting/ Calcutta and to the Saturday dance after August 1st.
